What inspired you to join DSS, and what excites you most about your role in the drone light show industry?

I have a strong love for the UAV industry and joining DSS is the next step in this fantastic journey into the future of the drone industry.

Can you share your professional background and experience in the drone, technology or entertainment industry?

As the owner of Flying Kiwi Drone Services, I bring a wealth of professional experience and expertise in the drone and technology industry. My journey began with a deep fascination for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and their potential to revolutionise various sectors.

Over the years, I have honed my skills in drone operation, aerial photography, and videography. I have a strong technical understanding of drone hardware and software. My background includes extensive hands-on experience in deploying drones for diverse applications such as surveying, environmental monitoring, and construction monitoring.

What do you hope to learn, achieve or accomplish during your time with DSS? 

During my time with Done Sky Shows, I hope to expand my expertise in the specialised field of drone light shows, gaining in-depth knowledge about the intricate choreography and technical precision required to execute spectacular aerial displays.

I aim to achieve a deeper understanding of the creative and logistical aspects involved in coordinating large-scale drone performances, from programming complex flight paths to ensuring safety and compliance with regulations.

I am eager to collaborate with a team of skilled professionals, sharing insights and learning from their experiences to enhance my capabilities. Ultimately, my goal is to contribute to the success of Done Sky Shows by leveraging my background in drone technology to innovate and elevate the quality of our productions, while also broadening my professional horizons and building lasting relationships within the industry.

Can you share a memorable experience you’ve had while working with DSS? 

So far, I have experienced working with DSS it has a great team/family culture with a lot of dedication to supporting the team. We work hard but also know how to have fun, making it a great balance.

How do you see the future of drone light shows evolving?

The future of drone light shows is poised for remarkable evolution, driven by advancements in technology, creativity, and regulatory support. As drone technology continues to progress, we can expect more sophisticated and smaller drones with enhanced flight capabilities, longer battery life, and greater precision.

This will allow for more intricate and complex choreographies, creating even more breathtaking displays. Integrating emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence will further enhance the spectacle, enabling real-time adjustments and interactive experiences for audiences. Additionally, advancements in LED and projection technology will provide more vibrant and dynamic visuals, pushing the boundaries of what is visually possible.

Regulatory frameworks are also likely to evolve, becoming more supportive of large-scale drone shows while ensuring safety and minimising risks. As public interest and demand for eco-friendly and innovative entertainment alternatives grow, drone light shows will increasingly replace traditional fireworks displays, offering a sustainable and customizable option. Overall, the future of drone light shows will be marked by greater creativity, technological sophistication, and widespread acceptance, transforming the way we experience outdoor entertainment.

What advice would you give someone interested in pursuing a career in drone light shows?

Begin with a strong foundation in drone technology.

Learn about drone hardware, software, and flight operations. Pursue certifications such as the CAA Part 102 Remote Pilot Certificate if you are in or have equivalent certifications in your country. The drone industry is rapidly evolving. Stay informed about the latest advancements, regulations, and innovations in drone technology and light shows.

Join industry forums, attend conferences, and participate in relevant online courses. Hands-on experience is invaluable, volunteer or intern with companies that specialise in drone shows. Ensure you comprehensively understand safety protocols and legal regulations related to drone operations. This knowledge is essential for conducting safe and compliant shows.

How do you stay motivated and inspired in your role?

Staying motivated and inspired in my role is driven by my passion for drone technology and creative expression, continuous learning, and the joy of bringing amazement to audiences. Collaborating with talented colleagues, setting personal goals, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance further fuel my enthusiasm and drive for excellence.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time when you’re not working on drone light shows?

In my free time, I enjoy mountain biking, riding motorbikes, spending time with my dogs, and sharing craft beers with friends. These activities help me unwind, stay active, and have fun. And of course some recreational flying
